Subject: Yeah,
the weird digital stuff creates modulation effects on the sound, so that Garcia sounds like he's being put through a ring mod. Otherwise a great performance.

This is from the Nov. 11, 1966 show at the Fillmore, a FABULOUS show.
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1966-11-19.fm.9730.shnf
Smokestack Lighting is ... down and dirty blues, smoky and moody, harp and guitar, Pigpen and Jerry masterful and in sync -- the first known time the Dead played it, according Deadbase. Smokestack slips into the slower King Bee, which has the feel of Hendrix' Voodoo Child. Man, oh, man.
There are plenty of other goodies in the 11/19/66 Fillmore show. Could have been a Dick's Pick, IMO. The version I linked to has a great Dancing in the Streets, which is missing in the other 2 versions here at Archive. Do yourself a favor and check out the whole show.
The sound quality really is quite good, not only for a 42-year-old show, but for shows here at Archive. Certainly beats any audience tape.

This is simply just absolutely incredible. I can't believe people are giving 1 star reviews because it's not some stellar quality. Yeah, maybe not for
...
your modern day, over produced as hell sound, but for 1967, and live, this is absolutely incredible. Not to mention that it most likely wasn't some ridiculous good record company recording, it was some guy doing the best he could to a live show, with whatever he had. This version of Smokestack Lightning is absolutely beautiful man.

I'll take this Smokestack Lightnin' over 98% of the stuff (the vast bulk of it garbage) being doled out, spoon-fed, and passed off as music to the masses
...
today (can you say sheep?). And those in the know, know what i mean. This is Pig's moment and he comes through, and i don't care about date, studio, live ... whatever, at the end of the day it's the music that matters. This stuff is raw, it's beautiful, it's historical, and it hits all the spots. Dig?

This is where I really first heard Pig play the harp.
I play the harmonica, but not like that. He is really amazing. His voice is so on.
The Pig ... deserves some time in the spotlight tonight.
I also am really digging Jerry's guitar. Nice early sound.
I really enjoyed the show. A real treat.
Thank you, Archive.org, for making this available.

To Ouija, Your 'obvious'comment,"...this is not a studio recording..." left me 'scratching my head'. Duh! It's from a show at the Fillmore; nothing 'studio'
...
about that! This was almost 40 years ago, recorded w/equipment that wasn't even on the 'drawing board', yet; this is simply a 'good' tape reproduction of the 'house sound', which is completely different type of sound reinforcement and it always suffers somewhat in a recording.
For what it is, this is NOT a bad reproduction of a show that, in reality, is simply a 'memory' in the 'minds' of those who were at the show.
I say, 'thank God, we at least have this one; shows going back this far, are few and far between for 'tape memories'. Let's not 'bitch' about 'poor sound quality' and just be 'thankful' that those out there who weren't fortunate to 'be there that night'can still 'enjoy the show'!\
Pax!

WOW... I just discovered this soundboard recording posted on the site. I read all the reviews prior to listening to a note. Undisirregardless of what the
...
unknowing say, this is a beautiful recording from a key year in which not many tapes are available. Is it mildly over-saturated in points? God Yes. Is it absolutely driving, pulsating music? Undoubtably! Is the bass audible? Extremely! Are Pig's vocals right up front? Indubidably! Is Jerry as sweet as sweet can be? Yuppers! Get it. Ignore the doubters and the ignorant. Some of you spoiled kids really need to develop an appreciation for what used to be available out there. How else can you make a value judgement on sound quality when you all doubt something that would have been an A- as a harsh judgement just a few years ago. Know of what you speak or shut the hell up. And who really cares if it is studio or live? It is new 67 Dead kids. You little rats who live with the impression that 86 Dead was the best really shouldn't be allowed to comment. Your words are ignorant.

1. It's 67 and we're very luck to have Anything from this era.
2. It sounds good.
3. Is it possible is was performed in the studio with a small crowd ... in the background... I used to work at a radio station and sometimes had bands in there. Sometimes there was a crowd of close friends there to hang out and watch the band.

OK, there is a debate of where it came from, studio or live. Here is the point you NEED to be paying attention to: It's a damn good piece work from Grateful
...
Dead, regardless of where or when it came from. Yes, I would like to know but it's not going to stop me from listening to this. The quality is good, considering all the variables with the time frame and quality. It is not a 1 star rating. Worth listening definately!

Sorry to say this does not sound like a studio recording. There is crowd noise in the background.
This recording is overprocessed and is digitally distorted ... which tells me that some one down the line tried to master the original recording (most likely with cheap software on their home computer)before uploading.
Low rating for sound quality.

11/19/66 ÃÂ which means it's the exact same material listed under 11/19 in your 1966 archive .
I also disagree comprehensively with the idea that this material was performed in the studio circa 1967.. I'm drawn to this conclusion by the perfectly audible applause / cheering that occurs when King Bee is completed. Sounds live to me, guys.
